If you look at the picture above, it's a plate of highly nutritious foods and these foods are good for you in moderation. But if you examine the plate for what is missing, you will notice that there are no carbohydrate rich foods. Basically, the Keto diet is a diet that is high in fats and proteins, but restricts sugars and carbohydrates. The idea of the Keto diet is to restrict carbs, so that the body will start to burn fat as fuel, thereby leading to weight loss. You can have all the fats and proteins you like such as meats, nuts, butter, or avocado. But no starches or sugars such as fruits, grains, or tuber vegetables. You can clearly see that this diet is problematic because of the restrictions.
I tried the Keto Diet several years ago, back when it was really hyped up in the health world. I only ate meats, nuts, and leafy greens. I did lose a lot of weight that time but later on I started to experience a few problems. First, I started to become constantly cold and I was always shivering. I used to work at a warehouse, and during one of my shifts, I was wearing a thick winter coat while my other coworkers were wearing short sleeves. Also, I had the worst sleep that time, and I was starting to get very moody because of the lack of sleep. My reaction time slowed down which became evident when I was playing computer games. The human brain needs glucose to function properly and I was depriving myself of much needed glucose. It was taking me a long time to get anything done. I was not in a good condition that time, and someone once asked if I'm alright when he saw me shivering. Once I quit the Keto diet and reintroduced carbs, I felt much better and those problems went away. My sleep improved, my body temperature returned to normal, and my reaction time became faster.
I read in books and on the internet that the Keto diet is good for you and I learned the hard way that you can't believe everything you read. I find it ironic that in my quest to becoming healthier, I actually worsened my health that time. Sometimes you just need to be exposed to the right information. I learned the hard way, but hopefully you don't have to. If you are thinking about trying the Keto diet then check out the article below for more information.
