Panic Buying: How Fear Makes a Crisis Worse

If you've been following the news recently, you've heard about the Port Strike that has started since October 1,2024. This can cause shortages in grocery stores if the strike continues for too long.

When I watched the videos about the strike, I've read comments that mentioned people that started panic buying food and even toilet paper. I thought to myself, "seriously, again?! " We all remember how during the pandemic, people hoarded toilet paper.

It's understandable that people have needs and we should stock up. But it's not right for one person to hoard all the items and leave nothing for the rest of the people.

Even if a crisis happened, everyone with dignity can ensure that their needs and everyone else's needs are met without hoarding. But if one person starts panic buying an item, that fear can easily spread and cause others to do the same. Panic buying makes the crisis even worse than it already is, because it makes life difficult for the rest of the people. One greedy person can cause a lot of problems.

During the pandemic, I never hoarded items or went panic buying, but I've always had enough of everything I needed.

I don't know what the future holds, but I hope that people in America would at least maintain their dignity even if a crisis happened. If people maintained their dignity, it makes things easier for everyone else.
