The Coming Danger of "Perfect" AI Companions

Updated: Apr 26

Relationships with other people aren't always easy. We hope that all our friends and family will always love us, support us, and remain loyal. But sometimes people lie, cheat, envy, manipulate, and hurt each other. Humans are imperfect and so our relationships with others will be imperfect. In order for a relationship to properly work, tolerance and forgiveness is required on everyone's part. In today's internet culture, both necessary attributes have become rare.

These days, I've noticed that people have been easily cutting others off if a challenge in the relationship came up. There's always someone else out there, so instead of trying to make a relationship work, people will move on and look for a better person. On the internet, we can block and unfriend those we don't like. We can easily message new people across different internet communities.

Because relationships are challenging, some people turn to animal companions like dogs and cats. It's understandable that sometimes animals are better companions because they don't lie, manipulate, or hurt our feelings. They are loyal and non judgemental.

If people can become attached to animals, then what if a perfect AI companion shows up on the scene. This AI can listen to all your problems and will seemingly love you no matter what. The AI will be able to solve your problems and will say all the things to make you happy. But right now, AI companions are in their beginning stages and have yet to reach mainstream status. But as technology advances in the coming decades, and the loneliness crisis increases, there will be a growing demand.

We as humans are meant to form relationships with other humans and not virtual lovers. Human relationships are challenging and sometimes risky, but ultimately rewarding. We must continue to be a good person on our part, but also have tolerance and forgiveness for others. If everybody continued to be the best versions of themselves, then AI companions will not be so widespread.
